Berthold Konrad Hermann Albert Speer was born in March 1905 in Mannheim [can be seen in the map to the left], Germany. Speer was born into a upper-middle class family. His father was a successful architect and believed that Albert should follow in his footsteps. After Speer attended the prestigious Technical University of Berlin where he studied under Heinrich Tessenow. Speer later went to work under Tessenow, after passing his exams in 1927 as Tessenow's personal assistant.
Speer joined the Nazi Regime in 1931 after being overwhelmed by hearing Hitler speak at his University. Speer joined the Nazi party in the hope that it would rebuild Germany in the era post Great Depression. He thought his skills as an architect would mean that he would assist the Nazi Party in rebuilding Germany.
